Narrative:
Visibility was very poor (haze) but 3 mi. I had just taken off for closed traffic. Upon turning downwind (800 ft), tower said '#2, cleared for option, follow katana.' I repeated clearance and said I was looking for katana. Abeam the numbers downwind, I saw a low wing, white airplane on a 1/2 mi final. I thought this was the katana, so I continued to the barges, turned base, then turned final. Before touchdown, tower said to make it a full stop and contact ground when clear. Ground said that I had cut off the katana. I acknowledged the information. Tower asked a question, I said I wasn't aware that I had cut off the katana, I thought I was following it per instructions. I taxied back to runway 30 and made 5 more touch-and-goes. The poor visibility contributed to the misident. I should have asked for confirmation when I thought I had the katana in sight. Tower probably should have asked me if I saw the katana and warned me when I turned base/final in front of it.

Title: PVT PLT OF AN SMA SEL FAILED TO FOLLOW TWR INSTRUCTIONS RESULTING IN TURNING IN FRONT OF ANOTHER ACFT ON FINAL.
Narrative: VISIBILITY WAS VERY POOR (HAZE) BUT 3 MI. I HAD JUST TAKEN OFF FOR CLOSED TFC. UPON TURNING DOWNWIND (800 FT), TWR SAID '#2, CLRED FOR OPTION, FOLLOW KATANA.' I REPEATED CLRNC AND SAID I WAS LOOKING FOR KATANA. ABEAM THE NUMBERS DOWNWIND, I SAW A LOW WING, WHITE AIRPLANE ON A 1/2 MI FINAL. I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE KATANA, SO I CONTINUED TO THE BARGES, TURNED BASE, THEN TURNED FINAL. BEFORE TOUCHDOWN, TWR SAID TO MAKE IT A FULL STOP AND CONTACT GND WHEN CLR. GND SAID THAT I HAD CUT OFF THE KATANA. I ACKNOWLEDGED THE INFO. TWR ASKED A QUESTION, I SAID I WASN'T AWARE THAT I HAD CUT OFF THE KATANA, I THOUGHT I WAS FOLLOWING IT PER INSTRUCTIONS. I TAXIED BACK TO RWY 30 AND MADE 5 MORE TOUCH-AND-GOES. THE POOR VISIBILITY CONTRIBUTED TO THE MISIDENT. I SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR CONFIRMATION WHEN I THOUGHT I HAD THE KATANA IN SIGHT. TWR PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE ASKED ME IF I SAW THE KATANA AND WARNED ME WHEN I TURNED BASE/FINAL IN FRONT OF IT.
