Narrative:

Runway 22R takeoff from ewr with an arthur kill 2 departure and lanna transition. Departure calls for 2 quick turns, a maximum crossing altitude, and either 260 degree heading for vectors or a 260 degree heading to intercept the sbj 100 degree radial, inbound. First officer flying. We missed our turn to the sbj 100 degree radial and continued to 260 degree heading. Human performance considerations: the day started early and we were both tired. The complexity of the departure suggested that after several turns we had 'done enough.' the depiction showed arrows going both ways, 1 for the continued heading and 1 diverging from it for our transition. In retrospect, it is clearly marked. Departure control noticed our error and cleared us direct sbj. Such complex departures should be (is not) included in the aircraft FMS database.

Narrative: RWY 22R TKOF FROM EWR WITH AN ARTHUR KILL 2 DEP AND LANNA TRANSITION. THE COMPLEXITY OF THE DEP SUGGESTED THAT AFTER SEVERAL TURNS WE HAD 'DONE ENOUGH.' THE DEPICTION SHOWED ARROWS GOING BOTH WAYS, 1 FOR THE CONTINUED HDG AND 1 DIVERGING FROM IT FOR OUR TRANSITION. IN RETROSPECT, IT IS CLRLY MARKED. DEP CTL NOTICED OUR ERROR AND CLRED US DIRECT SBJ. SUCH COMPLEX DEPS SHOULD BE (IS NOT) INCLUDED IN THE ACFT FMS DATABASE.
