Narrative:
Immediately after takeoff from lga, an unidented odor was apparent in the cockpit. At the same time, a flight attendant reported smoke in the cabin. I advised departure control that I wanted an immediate return to lga. Thanks to an excellent job by all those people involved, we landed safely at lga. Total flight time was 7 mins. Maintenance personnel later determined the smoke was caused by the air conditioning system.
