Narrative:

Right air conditioning pack overheat. Cabin smoke. Declared emergency. Returned to dtw. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter stated that the cause of the right pack overheat was apparently due to a bad automatic temperature controller. The flight attendants did advise the flight crew that there was smoke in the cabin. Since there was smoke and the 'pack' automatically shut down, the decision was made to return and land since they were only about 10 mins out. An emergency was declared. Maintenance determined that it was caused by a bad automatic temperature controller and MEL'd the aircraft for manual use only.
