Narrative:

Level at 6000 ft MSL over ord on radar vectors for approach to runway 27L. Flaps 11 degrees, 180 KTS in solid IFR conditions. We had a GPWS alert with a climb, climb and radar altimeter decreasing below 1000 ft. We executed the GPWS escape procedures over ord. The GPWS alert stopped about 7800 ft MSL. We leveled off at 9000 ft followed by a landing on runway 27L without incident. During the escape procedure we contacted ord approach control and advised them we were climbing on the GPWS alert.

WE HAD A GPWS ALERT WITH A CLB, CLB AND RADAR ALTIMETER DECREASING BELOW 1000 FT. WE EXECUTED THE GPWS ESCAPE PROCS OVER ORD. THE GPWS ALERT STOPPED ABOUT 7800 FT MSL. WE LEVELED OFF AT 9000 FT FOLLOWED BY A LNDG ON RWY 27L WITHOUT INCIDENT. DURING THE ESCAPE PROC WE CONTACTED ORD APCH CTL AND ADVISED THEM WE WERE CLBING ON THE GPWS ALERT.
