Narrative:

Climbing through 9500 ft loud explosion front of aircraft with loud wind noise from front. Jolt knock off autoplt. Hand flew to 10000 ft and leveloff. Could not determine cause of explosion. Diverted into msy, new orleans. Asked for emergency equipment at msy and handling by controllers. Handling normal. Taxiing in, tower advised us that there was a large hole on right side of radome approximately 2 ft in diameter. At gate found parts of a goose.

Title: FLC OF A DC9-30 DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED TO LAND AFTER HEARING AN EXPLOSION, AND A SUBSEQUENT LOUD WIND NOISE, DURING CLBOUT IN FRONT PORTION OF THE ACFT. TWR ADVISED OF A LARGE HOLE ON R SIDE OF RADOME DURING TAXI IN. SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION OF THE ACFT DISCLOSED THAT A GOOSE STRUCK THE ACFT CAUSING THE HOLE.

AT GATE FOUND PARTS OF A GOOSE.
