Intermittent cargo smoke warning. Emergency procedure for cargo smoke and emergency evacuate/evacuation performed per QRH. Emergency declared with ZID. Good communication all around. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was a canadair regional jet and the problem was an intermittent cargo compartment smoke warning. The reporter said the cause of the smoke warning was an overheated cargo compartment vent fan which did not trip the circuit breaker.

Title: A CANADAIR REGIONAL JET IN CRUISE AT FL310 DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO AN INTERMITTENT CARGO COMPARTMENT SMOKE WARNING CAUSED BY AN OVERHEATED CARGO COMPARTMENT VENT FAN.

CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS A CANADAIR REGIONAL JET AND THE PROB WAS AN INTERMITTENT CARGO COMPARTMENT SMOKE WARNING. THE RPTR SAID THE CAUSE OF THE SMOKE WARNING WAS AN OVERHEATED CARGO COMPARTMENT VENT FAN WHICH DID NOT TRIP THE CIRCUIT BREAKER.
