Narrative:

Controller cleared us to cross 70 NM southwest of lgc VORTAC at FL290. We entered the waypoint constraint into the FMS at a fix we believed was 71 NM southwest of lgc. Controller later queried us about our descent and we expedited down to FL290. There was no traffic conflict. Reviewing our actions we determined that our waypoint constraint should have been at mgm VORTAC, which was approximately 75 NM southwest of lgc. Since there were three fixes between our position when we got our clearance, perhaps it would have been better to reference the crossing restr off the closest one.
