Narrative:

Cleared for takeoff by fargo tower. On the climb to 4000 ft I started a left turn to on course. I was handed off to fargo departure. I asked, am I cleared left on course? They said no, maintain runway heading. I immediately corrected. The deviation took me only slightly off the centerline. Later I was told to report reaching 12000 ft. Later ATC said 'I have radar contact with you at 12000 ft.' I forgot to report.
