Narrative:

ATC cleared us for descent to what I heard was 3000 ft. But first officer put 4000 ft in altitude selector. At 3500 ft first officer said we should have stopped at 4000 ft, so I climbed back to 4000 ft. ATC was busy so we never could verify altitude.
