Captain of a B737-300 lost control of aircraft during takeoff roll. One engine's power came in earlier than the other. Aircraft veered off centerline of runway due to the differential power and icy runway that rendered the nosewheel steering ineffective. Takeoff was aborted, and control regained by the application of reverse thrust.

Narrative:
On application of takeoff power, #2 engine spooled up quicker than #1 engine, causing aircraft to start skidding left. Unable to control slide with either nosewheel steering or brakes due to icy runway. Control regained with differential reverser, brought aircraft back to center of runway. Taxied off runway at next intersection and subsequent takeoff made uneventfully with slower power application. Runway was plowed only in center.
