Narrative:

On departure from burbank airport using a SID I was turning to the departure heading to intercept V-186 vny VOR 095 degree radial. I turned to a heading of 120 degrees and noted that the 095 degree radial was to my left. I turned to the left to intercept it. ATC advised me that I was flying into higher terrain. They told me to turn right heading 180 degrees. I turned to the right and climbed to 4800 ft to miss the ground. 4000 ft was my assigned altitude. I climbed to miss the terrain which I was led to believe was right in front of me due to the controller's tone of voice. The terrain was missed and ATC gave me a new heading and altitude to fly. I was then advised to contact the next controller. At the time of this occurrence I was receiving the vny VOR with a positive indication.
