Narrative:

At FL240, IMC, with airfoil and engine anti-ice on, I smelled fumes. The lead flight attendant verified and also heard the forward lavatory smoke alarm going off. I went back to investigate and as I opened the lavatory door, I could smell smoke but I could not determine where it was coming from. The captain and I donned oxygen masks and goggles. Ran the appropriate checklists and the smoke started to subside. We landed on the dtw runway 3R with all emergency equipment standing by. The landing was uneventful and evacuate/evacuation was not necessary as confirmed by the crew and firefighters. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: confirmed aircraft as DC9-30. Reporter first officer believes the smoke was caused by residual deicing fluid leaking into air conditioning pack. The aircraft had been deiced prior to this leg, and the smell was like deicing fluid. They were on their way to dtw and continued though the closest airport was right under them, yqg. However, they were unfamiliar with yqg and were with dtw. That, coupled with the WX and dtw was only about 5 mins away they continued. Reporter says there are 2 smoke removal procedures and they opted for the one which did not call for turning off the air conditioning packs.

Title: DC9-30 ACFT IN CRUISE HAD SMOKE IN THE CABIN OF UNDETERMINED SOURCE. FLC DECLARED EMER, COMPLETED EMER SMOKE REMOVAL CHKLISTS, DONNED OXYGEN MASKS AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY. SMOKE DISSIPATED AND CAUSE WAS SUSPECTED TO BE DEICING FLUID IN AIR CONDITIONING PACK.

Narrative: AT FL240, IMC, WITH AIRFOIL AND ENG ANTI-ICE ON, I SMELLED FUMES. THE LEAD FLT ATTENDANT VERIFIED AND ALSO HEARD THE FORWARD LAVATORY SMOKE ALARM GOING OFF. I WENT BACK TO INVESTIGATE AND AS I OPENED THE LAVATORY DOOR, I COULD SMELL SMOKE BUT I COULD NOT DETERMINE WHERE IT WAS COMING FROM. THE CAPT AND I DONNED OXYGEN MASKS AND GOGGLES. THE LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL AND EVAC WAS NOT NECESSARY AS CONFIRMED BY THE CREW AND FIREFIGHTERS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: CONFIRMED ACFT AS DC9-30. RPTR FO BELIEVES THE SMOKE WAS CAUSED BY RESIDUAL DEICING FLUID LEAKING INTO AIR CONDITIONING PACK. THE ACFT HAD BEEN DEICED PRIOR TO THIS LEG, AND THE SMELL WAS LIKE DEICING FLUID. THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY TO DTW AND CONTINUED THOUGH THE CLOSEST ARPT WAS RIGHT UNDER THEM, YQG. HOWEVER, THEY WERE UNFAMILIAR WITH YQG AND WERE WITH DTW. THAT, COUPLED WITH THE WX AND DTW WAS ONLY ABOUT 5 MINS AWAY THEY CONTINUED. RPTR SAYS THERE ARE 2 SMOKE REMOVAL PROCS AND THEY OPTED FOR THE ONE WHICH DID NOT CALL FOR TURNING OFF THE AIR CONDITIONING PACKS.
