Narrative:

At XX18 pm on oct/sun/97, I was on a cross country to 08C from lot. I flew from lot direct to cgt VOR. Upon crossing cgt VOR, I called gary tower and told them 'cessna XXX is level at 2600 ft would like transition from cgt to the lakefront.' he replied 'transition approved.' I then climbed to 3500 ft so I could cruise at a VFR cruising altitude and lean the mixture. I leveled off at 3500 ft and dead ahead was an airline B737. I then pulled carburetor heat and throttle to idle and maneuvered into a dive. While in the dive I heard the roar of the engines overhead. I leveled off at 2400 ft and called gary tower to tell them what had happened.
