Narrative:

Given descent to 5500 ft MSL by avl approach control. We were level at 5500 ft MSL and GPWS warning occurred. GPWS escape maneuver was performed and warning stopped. Normal approach and landing followed. I recommend MVA be changed from 5500 ft MSL to 6000 ft MSL. Supplemental information from acn 387738: after level for a few mins, we had a GPWS warning of 'terrain, terrain, climb.' we climbed to 8000 ft MSL during the escape maneuver. Notified ashville approach. We were reclred to 4000 ft MSL. No aircraft conflicts experienced.
