Narrative:

Called stl ground for taxi instructions. Gave us unusual taxi route then changed it. He then instructed us to taxi via the airline ramp (which is not listed anywhere on the airport diagram). Then taxi via taxiway D to runway 6 and hold short of runway 12R. After clearance to cross runway 12R, we were told to hold short of runway 12L. The problem being after crossing runway 12R there is not enough clearance after crossing runway 12R to hold short. And because runway 6 doesn't intersect with runway 12L, but rather is displaced about 500 ft before the approach end of runway 12L, it's hard to tell where the hold short line is if any. The tendency is to taxi too close to the approach of runway 12L. Corrective action: don't use an active runway for standard taxi operations especially in st louis, where the volume of traffic is heavy. Isn't that why we construct txwys?

Title: LTT COMMUTER INSTRUCTED TO TAXI ON ACTIVE RWY BUT HOLD SHORT BTWN 2 RWYS, SEES NO HOLD LINE AND APPARENTLY TAXIES TOO FAR.

Narrative: CALLED STL GND FOR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. GAVE US UNUSUAL TAXI RTE THEN CHANGED IT. HE THEN INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI VIA THE AIRLINE RAMP (WHICH IS NOT LISTED ANYWHERE ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM). THEN TAXI VIA TXWY D TO RWY 6 AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 12R. AFTER CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 12R, WE WERE TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 12L. THE PROB BEING AFTER XING RWY 12R THERE IS NOT ENOUGH CLRNC AFTER XING RWY 12R TO HOLD SHORT. AND BECAUSE RWY 6 DOESN'T INTERSECT WITH RWY 12L, BUT RATHER IS DISPLACED ABOUT 500 FT BEFORE THE APCH END OF RWY 12L, IT'S HARD TO TELL WHERE THE HOLD SHORT LINE IS IF ANY. THE TENDENCY IS TO TAXI TOO CLOSE TO THE APCH OF RWY 12L. CORRECTIVE ACTION: DON'T USE AN ACTIVE RWY FOR STANDARD TAXI OPS ESPECIALLY IN ST LOUIS, WHERE THE VOLUME OF TFC IS HVY. ISN'T THAT WHY WE CONSTRUCT TXWYS?
