Narrative:

Location: ord 140 degree radial 10 NM. Cleared to 090 degree heading, base leg for ILS runway 14R following heavy jet. Began to cross runway 14R centerline with no vector for intercept. Unable to get a word on frequency. Crossed runway 14L centerline before approach asked if we were turning in I said no intercept vector was ever given. All surrounding aircraft were visually picked up and a visual approach was continued to runway 14R. No other problems.

Title: SINCE APCH CTL DID NOT SPECIFY AN INTERCEPT VECTOR TO FINAL WHEN FLC OF AN MD80 WAS CLRED ON A BASE LEG, THEY OVERSHOT FINAL. ATC INTERVENED AND SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED THEM FOR A VISUAL APCH. FREQ CONGESTION PREVENTED THE FLC FROM QUERYING ATC WHEN GOING THROUGH FINAL WITH NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS FROM ATC.

UNABLE TO GET A WORD ON FREQ. CROSSED RWY 14L CTRLINE BEFORE APCH ASKED IF WE WERE TURNING IN I SAID NO INTERCEPT VECTOR WAS EVER GIVEN. ALL SURROUNDING ACFT WERE VISUALLY PICKED UP AND A VISUAL APCH WAS CONTINUED TO RWY 14R. NO OTHER PROBS.
