Narrative:

My flight number was similar to another on the same frequency. We were on the KAYOH3 arrival to sna when we received a clearance to cross dawna intersection at 12000 ft and 250 KTS. I was working the radio and read back the clearance explicitly using company and flight number. We shortly thereafter received an amendment to cross dawna at 300 KTS or greater -- again I read it back using company and flight number. During rapid descent to make crossing, passing about 23500 ft, controller calls 'confirm level at 25000 ft,' I responded 'negative we were cleared to cross dawna at 12000 ft.' controller states 'that clearance was for another air carrier, maintain FL250,' then changes clearance quickly to 'maintain FL240.' I read back both clrncs and respond that we are sure the clearance to 12000 ft was for us. (Having flown this arrival many times I knew that we needed the clearance when it was issued or the restr would be tight.) controller voice changes and we are asked to contact ZLA by phone upon arrival. Phone contact with supervisor after arrival -- he indicates separation was lost and investigation is in progress, further, he says that both we and the other air carrier are clear of responsibility. (I assume that tapes had been pulled at this point, and we were shown to be correct.)

Title: AN ACR LGT FLC REACT TO A CLRNC THAT WAS, APPARENTLY, GIVEN TO THEM IN ERROR THAT CAUSED A LTSS EVENT.

Narrative: MY FLT NUMBER WAS SIMILAR TO ANOTHER ON THE SAME FREQ. WE WERE ON THE KAYOH3 ARR TO SNA WHEN WE RECEIVED A CLRNC TO CROSS DAWNA INTXN AT 12000 FT AND 250 KTS. I WAS WORKING THE RADIO AND READ BACK THE CLRNC EXPLICITLY USING COMPANY AND FLT NUMBER. WE SHORTLY THEREAFTER RECEIVED AN AMENDMENT TO CROSS DAWNA AT 300 KTS OR GREATER -- AGAIN I READ IT BACK USING COMPANY AND FLT NUMBER. DURING RAPID DSCNT TO MAKE XING, PASSING ABOUT 23500 FT, CTLR CALLS 'CONFIRM LEVEL AT 25000 FT,' I RESPONDED 'NEGATIVE WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS DAWNA AT 12000 FT.' CTLR STATES 'THAT CLRNC WAS FOR ANOTHER ACR, MAINTAIN FL250,' THEN CHANGES CLRNC QUICKLY TO 'MAINTAIN FL240.' I READ BACK BOTH CLRNCS AND RESPOND THAT WE ARE SURE THE CLRNC TO 12000 FT WAS FOR US. (HAVING FLOWN THIS ARR MANY TIMES I KNEW THAT WE NEEDED THE CLRNC WHEN IT WAS ISSUED OR THE RESTR WOULD BE TIGHT.) CTLR VOICE CHANGES AND WE ARE ASKED TO CONTACT ZLA BY PHONE UPON ARR. PHONE CONTACT WITH SUPVR AFTER ARR -- HE INDICATES SEPARATION WAS LOST AND INVESTIGATION IS IN PROGRESS, FURTHER, HE SAYS THAT BOTH WE AND THE OTHER ACR ARE CLR OF RESPONSIBILITY. (I ASSUME THAT TAPES HAD BEEN PULLED AT THIS POINT, AND WE WERE SHOWN TO BE CORRECT.)
