Narrative:

Aircraft was struck by ground personnel after crew performed walkaround. The crew was not notified. Neither crew member nor flight attendant felt or observed anything unusual to indicate aircraft was struck. After flight to iad, aircraft was noted as having small cracks in left engine nacelle. After discussing with maintenance control we did not write up damage. However, maintenance made repairs to nacelle after determining it needed repairs. Aircraft was 'downed' by FAA because of paperwork discrepancy. Looking back, I (captain) should have written up damage even though I thought initially that the damage was superficial.
