Narrative:

We were vectored for a visual approach to runway 12 at mia. As we neared the runway, a foreign carrier's B747 was taking position on runway 9L. In order for the B747 to taxi onto runway 9L, it had to 'jet blast' the area of the threshold of runway 12. The wind was 080 degrees at 9 KTS. As we neared the runway, I cautioned the first officer to watch for jet blast from the B747. His approach was totally stabilized. At about 50 ft AGL, we hit rough air, a gain of 10-15 KTS airspeed, followed by a rapid loss of 15 KTS. We touched down very firmly, nose high at vref and experienced a high bounce. Due to the ht of the bounce, as captain, I commanded a go around. We landed uneventfully the next time around in smooth air.

IN ORDER FOR THE B747 TO TAXI ONTO RWY 9L, IT HAD TO 'JET BLAST' THE AREA OF THE THRESHOLD OF RWY 12. THE WIND WAS 080 DEGS AT 9 KTS. AS WE NEARED THE RWY, I CAUTIONED THE FO TO WATCH FOR JET BLAST FROM THE B747. HIS APCH WAS TOTALLY STABILIZED. AT ABOUT 50 FT AGL, WE HIT ROUGH AIR, A GAIN OF 10-15 KTS AIRSPD, FOLLOWED BY A RAPID LOSS OF 15 KTS. WE TOUCHED DOWN VERY FIRMLY, NOSE HIGH AT VREF AND EXPERIENCED A HIGH BOUNCE. DUE TO THE HT OF THE BOUNCE, AS CAPT, I COMMANDED A GAR. WE LANDED UNEVENTFULLY THE NEXT TIME AROUND IN SMOOTH AIR.
