Narrative:

'B' flight attendant did not show up in hotel lobby when we were supposed to meet as a crew. We had his room checked (by hotel security) and he was not there (nor were his bags). We assumed he would be at airport. On arrival at airport, 'B' flight attendant was not present. Approximately 30 mins prior to estimated departure time, 'a' and 'C' flight attendants called crew scheduling to obtain replacement 'B' flight attendant. We began boarding using an extra company pilot (qualified on B737-300) as 'qualified crew member' (we require 3 crew members to be in cabin on originating flts during passenger boarding). Original 'B' flight attendant shows up and is mad we called out replacement 'B' flight attendant and says he wants to fly the trip. 'A' and 'C' flight attendants meet with him and say replacement has been called and is on way. Captain informed of situation by 'a' and 'C' flight attendants. 'A' flight attendant alludes that 'B' flight attendant has smell of liquor on breath. Captain goes out to jetway to check situation but 'B' flight attendant in terminal arguing with agents and crew scheduling on telephone. Captain, who never did see original 'B' flight attendant, says in no way will he be allowed on aircraft in any capacity -- either as crew member or passenger. (Captain told this to 4 agents in jetway -- they agreed.) replacement 'B' flight attendant arrived and flight departed gate approximately 30 mins late. Captain did not allow 'B' flight attendant (original 'B') on aircraft due to unruly behavior and possible hostility toward crew and possible intoxication.
