Narrative:

We were on downwind (left) for runway 32 on a visual approach. Another aircraft was on final. The other aircraft said, 'go ahead and land first, I'll follow.' so we turned left base and in the turn, the first officer (who was flying) saw that other aircraft and said it looked very close. Estimated 1/4 - 1/2 mi and same altitude. Not my idea of safe spacing. We didn't have that aircraft in sight when he said 'go ahead, land first.' we were letting that other aircraft provide separation, because he said he had us in sight. (Next time I'll be more courteous and insist other aircraft go first!)
