Narrative:

While reviewing navigation charts to follow my clearance, my autoplt hold was not engaged and my altitude increased approximately 400-500 ft. It was brought to my attention by ATC. I immediately descended to my assigned altitude and ensured the autoplt was engaged properly.

Title: PLT OF AN SMT TWIN FAILED TO ENGAGE THE AUTOPLT ALT HOLD WHILE IN CRUISE REVIEWING CHARTS RESULTING IN ACFT CLBING OFF ALT BY 500 FT. ATC INTERVENED TO BRING HIM BACK TO ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative: WHILE REVIEWING NAV CHARTS TO FOLLOW MY CLRNC, MY AUTOPLT HOLD WAS NOT ENGAGED AND MY ALT INCREASED APPROX 400-500 FT. IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTN BY ATC. I IMMEDIATELY DSNDED TO MY ASSIGNED ALT AND ENSURED THE AUTOPLT WAS ENGAGED PROPERLY.
