Narrative:

Aircraft took off to the north on porte 1 departure. Captain said 'clear left' so first officer turned to left on 200 degree heading. ATC said that we were supposed to wait until 1600 ft/4 DME before left turn. Believe when captain said clear left, his intention was to say first officer was cleared to intercept 350 degree radial off sfo. Captain/first officer did not realize the problem until ATC brought it to flight crew's attention.
