Narrative:

En route between sea and anc received clearance from ZSE to anc via direct laire during climb out. Subsequently, did not receive handoff from ZSE to vancouver center. Later in the flight, realized radios were quiet (late night flight). Tried to contact vancouver center to no avail. Having transited vancouver center, made contact with zan for flight following. Contributing factor was conversations with other pilot at cruise. Company en route radio was also tuned 1 digit off (8 versus 9). At night, during a quiet radio environment, will make a habit of putting some radio changeover points on the fix page of the FMS and having volume and lights for radios turned up higher. Supplemental information from acn 376757: things to consider to prevent future occurrence. 1) keep radio volume up loud enough to prevent any distrs. 2) know that radio frequencys are quieter at night so I might have to do a 'radio check' with ATC. 3) be more aware of location on route that certain radio frequencys are used. 4) don't assume that the other pilot has talked with ATC on the frequency being used. Ask him/her who we are talking to at the present time.

Title: B737-400 FLC FAILS TO CONTACT VANCOUVER CTR AFTER LEAVING ZSE SECTOR. CZVR NEVER WAS CONTACTED. CREW CITES FAILURE OF ZSE CTLR TO PERFORM THE HDOF AS A MAJOR CAUSE OF EVENT. CREW FINALLY CONTACTS ZAN CTR ABEAM YAK, AK. PIC ADMITS TO CONVERSING WITH FO AS ANOTHER FACTOR. NO COMPANY INCOMING POSSIBLE, #2 RADIO MISTUNED.
