Narrative:

Radio volume too low -- passenger interruption, missed call from ATC. Climbing out on IFR clearance to FL310 and passing through FL250, passenger came to cockpit -- the pilot went off the headset. Copilot stayed on with ATC. Copilot heard ZBW controller say tail number and 'identify.' copilot answered and responded. ATC was agitated and asked if crew had heard first 2 calls. Copilot said 'negative.' about 1 min later copilot asked if identify received. Controller said yes and are you in the turn to the left. This was the first the crew had heard about a turn (pilot was on headset now). A left turn 30 degrees was initiated. Controller was agitated and asked when turn was started. Maintain new altitude of FL280, crew complied. Flight was then cleared on course and at FL280. The airplane was within altitude limits at all times. The 'turn' was the only problem.
