Narrative:

On in-range call, thought we ordered fuel. On arrival, got WX, loaded passenger and bags and on 'before start' checklist at 'fuel quantity' saw what I expected to see (1400 pounds), when, in fact, we only had 900 pounds onboard. Taxied out and departed (all checklists run). After departure, during climb, first officer made 'out/off/fuel on board' call. As he did, I noted we had inadequate fuel for the flight and needed to return to ind -- notified operations and ATC (no fuel emergency) and returned without incident. I'm not sure that the gauges were right or wrong on the ground but in the air the rechk showed insufficient fuel. Causal factors: fatigue -- 8TH leg of 8 leg day (over 7 hours in 12 hours). Hot, cabin temperature approximately 90 degrees all day. Trying to maintain on time performance which had been/is an issue.
