Narrative:

En route from atl-hsv. At FL220, approximately 75 DME southeast of rqz VOR, experienced interference on atl frequency 132.05 that sound like a 'bug zapper' on an insect filled night. The noise stopped when center transmitted or another aircraft transmitted, but communication quality from center was poor. I reported the interference to ZTL. Center response was that my report was a frequent complaint from MD88 crews on that frequency. Interference ceased at 40 DME from rqz VOR. I believe this 'zapping' is a safety problem as it is very distracting and some of the center xmissions were very difficult to understand.
