Narrative:

Shortly after cycling the no smoking sign after takeoff, I noticed the seat belt sign switch was in the off position. We are not sure if it was accidentally clicked off when the no smoking sign was cycled, or if it was inadvertently missed during the before starting checklist due to maintenance distraction in the cockpit during that portion of the checklist.

Title: MD80S ACFT DURING CLB FLC NOTICED SEAT BELT SIGN NOT ON. EITHER HAD BEEN MISSED ON CHKLIST OR INADVERTENTLY TURNED OFF WHEN CYCLING THE NO SMOKING SIGN.

Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER CYCLING THE NO SMOKING SIGN AFTER TKOF, I NOTICED THE SEAT BELT SIGN SWITCH WAS IN THE OFF POS. WE ARE NOT SURE IF IT WAS ACCIDENTALLY CLICKED OFF WHEN THE NO SMOKING SIGN WAS CYCLED, OR IF IT WAS INADVERTENTLY MISSED DURING THE BEFORE STARTING CHKLIST DUE TO MAINT DISTR IN THE COCKPIT DURING THAT PORTION OF THE CHKLIST.
