Narrative:

Experienced brief encounter with severe turbulence. Filed PIREP and notified dispatcher. No injuries and no damage, but aircraft briefly out of control (ACARS level 5). Dispatcher advised he would arrange required inspection. Forgot to make required logbook entry. Dispatcher's comment regarding inspection seemed to bring closure. Inspection not performed in lax account breakdown in communications with local maintenance facility. Subsequent inspection (after 2 legs flown) revealed no damage. Supplemental information from acn 368705: other flts reporting rough ride in vicinity. Seat belt signs on. Flight attendants seated and briefed prior to encounter. No injury to anyone. A liquor cart toppled on side. A flight operations manager informed me after the flight that a position report used the term severe turbulence, which would require a logbook entry, and aircraft inspection. I did not hear the position report, so cannot say whether that was the case. No crew member felt the encounter was of a magnitude that called for an inspection, and the captain so informed dispatch.
