Narrative:

Approaching huber intersection, crew picked up a line of thunderstorms on radar that appeared to stretch from croak intersection, AR9, to creeq intersection, A523. Initially we felt a 50 mi west deviation would be sufficient so we requested this with new york oceanic. While waiting for a reply, the captain used his emergency authority/authorized to begin deviation. When we realized 50 mi would be insufficient we requested a direct phone patch to ATC. After a discussion of our situation with ATC, we were cleared to turn around and deviation up to 100 mi east of course around the WX then direct to bergh intersection. The deviation around the WX was without further incident.
