Narrative:

Captain flying first officer communicating. First officer called TCASII target at 1130 O'clock 8-10 mi, 1500 ft below climbing to 1000 ft below and closing rapidly head on. TCASII RA commanded climb. Captain initiated gentle climb until target showed 12 O'clock 500 ft below 1-2 mi and closing, then aggressively turned right 45 degrees off course and climbed 800 ft. First officer advised ATC of evasive action. Target passed less than 1 mi along left side, approximately 200 ft below. When clear, captain descended to FL280 and rejoined airway. Both pilots believe RA was real and aggressive evasive action averted collision.
