Narrative:

On departure from pie, ATC instructed me to fly a heading of 270 degrees and maintain 1600 ft. Departure then instructed me to climb to 6000 ft. As I was climbing through 5300 ft, ATC called and advised that I had only been cleared to 4000 ft. A brief argument ensued at which time ATC reiterated that I had only been cleared to 4000 ft. I believe to the best of my knowledge that I had been cleared to 6000 ft. ATC then instructed me to descend and maintain 5000 ft. There was no conflict with other traffic.
