Narrative:

Flight san-dtw, mar/mon/97, airbus A332, first officer flying the aircraft. The flight was filed from san to dtw via the BRDR4 over jli, pke, J78K drk, etc, and this route was programmed into the flight computer by the first officer. Shortly after departure from runway 27 at san, and after having been turned over to socal departure, the controller took us off the BRDR4 departure and cleared us via a left turn direct pgi with a turn to 070 degrees for vectors to trm after passing pgi. While on the 070 degree heading after pgi, socal departure clears us to direct to pgi, flight plan route, and turns us over to ZLA. We fly direct to jli and from there proceed direct to pke as was programmed into the flight computer. Shortly after passing jli, ZLA asks us what heading we were flying to trm. It was here we realized something was wrong because we were not proceeding to trm. ZLA turned us toward trm (about 14 mi to the northwest of our position), and as we approached trm, he reclred us direct to pke, flight plan route. We received our clearance via pre departure clearance. The pre departure clearance clearance was slightly different from the filed flight plan in that after jli, it added direct trm, direct pke. We both missed this. It is my airline's policy that the captain loads the flight plan and the first officer checks it for accuracy. Because I (the captain) was preoccupied with an unrelated problem, the first officer loaded the flight plan and nobody rechked it.

Title: A320 FLC TAKES HDG FOR WRONG WAYPOINT WHEN CLRED 'FLT PLAN RTE' BY ZLA. FO HAD PROGRAMMED FMC WHEN CAPT SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS TASK WITH THE FO BACKING UP IN A REVIEW OF FMC INPUTS.

Narrative: FLT SAN-DTW, MAR/MON/97, AIRBUS A332, FO FLYING THE ACFT. THE FLT WAS FILED FROM SAN TO DTW VIA THE BRDR4 OVER JLI, PKE, J78K DRK, ETC, AND THIS RTE WAS PROGRAMMED INTO THE FLT COMPUTER BY THE FO. SHORTLY AFTER DEP FROM RWY 27 AT SAN, AND AFTER HAVING BEEN TURNED OVER TO SOCAL DEP, THE CTLR TOOK US OFF THE BRDR4 DEP AND CLRED US VIA A L TURN DIRECT PGI WITH A TURN TO 070 DEGS FOR VECTORS TO TRM AFTER PASSING PGI. WHILE ON THE 070 DEG HDG AFTER PGI, SOCAL DEP CLRS US TO DIRECT TO PGI, FLT PLAN RTE, AND TURNS US OVER TO ZLA. WE FLY DIRECT TO JLI AND FROM THERE PROCEED DIRECT TO PKE AS WAS PROGRAMMED INTO THE FLT COMPUTER. SHORTLY AFTER PASSING JLI, ZLA ASKS US WHAT HDG WE WERE FLYING TO TRM. IT WAS HERE WE REALIZED SOMETHING WAS WRONG BECAUSE WE WERE NOT PROCEEDING TO TRM. ZLA TURNED US TOWARD TRM (ABOUT 14 MI TO THE NW OF OUR POS), AND AS WE APCHED TRM, HE RECLRED US DIRECT TO PKE, FLT PLAN RTE. WE RECEIVED OUR CLRNC VIA PDC. THE PDC CLRNC WAS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FROM THE FILED FLT PLAN IN THAT AFTER JLI, IT ADDED DIRECT TRM, DIRECT PKE. WE BOTH MISSED THIS. IT IS MY AIRLINE'S POLICY THAT THE CAPT LOADS THE FLT PLAN AND THE FO CHKS IT FOR ACCURACY. BECAUSE I (THE CAPT) WAS PREOCCUPIED WITH AN UNRELATED PROB, THE FO LOADED THE FLT PLAN AND NOBODY RECHKED IT.
