Narrative:

After reporting a 2 mi right base for runway 16L, the tower instructed my students and I to pass behind a helicopter on final for runway 16R. Although we could not see the helicopter, we both assumed he was low and on short final. We also allowed ourselves to be distraction by our lesson objectives. Apparently, the helicopter was below but outside of our base. The tower, fearing that we were descending into his flight path, instructed us to turn left immediately to avoid a conflict. As we began our turn, we saw the helicopter pass below and in front of us. Our separation looked adequate, but the controller was obviously concerned. After we cleared the helicopter we asked the controller if she would like us to execute a 270 degree turn, but she declined. After some maneuvering to become re- established with final, she instructed us to go around, which we did.

Title: NMAC. INSTRUCTOR PLT IN A C152 FAILED TO DIRECT HIS FLYING STUDENT TO RTE THEIR ACFT BEHIND AN APCHING HELI FOR THE PARALLEL RWY TO WHICH THEY WERE XING FINAL AS REQUESTED BY THE TWR. THE TWR CTLR TURNED THEM AWAY FROM FINAL AND SUBSEQUENTLY SENT THEM AROUND IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN ADEQUATE SEPARATION.

Narrative: AFTER RPTING A 2 MI R BASE FOR RWY 16L, THE TWR INSTRUCTED MY STUDENTS AND I TO PASS BEHIND A HELI ON FINAL FOR RWY 16R. ALTHOUGH WE COULD NOT SEE THE HELI, WE BOTH ASSUMED HE WAS LOW AND ON SHORT FINAL. WE ALSO ALLOWED OURSELVES TO BE DISTR BY OUR LESSON OBJECTIVES. APPARENTLY, THE HELI WAS BELOW BUT OUTSIDE OF OUR BASE. THE TWR, FEARING THAT WE WERE DSNDING INTO HIS FLT PATH, INSTRUCTED US TO TURN L IMMEDIATELY TO AVOID A CONFLICT. AS WE BEGAN OUR TURN, WE SAW THE HELI PASS BELOW AND IN FRONT OF US. OUR SEPARATION LOOKED ADEQUATE, BUT THE CTLR WAS OBVIOUSLY CONCERNED. AFTER WE CLRED THE HELI WE ASKED THE CTLR IF SHE WOULD LIKE US TO EXECUTE A 270 DEG TURN, BUT SHE DECLINED. AFTER SOME MANEUVERING TO BECOME RE- ESTABLISHED WITH FINAL, SHE INSTRUCTED US TO GAR, WHICH WE DID.
