Narrative:

In what is appearing to be a trend, we are experiencing 'mco mania' in the final month of the quarter. This was second aircraft of day which was dispatched with automatic ground spoilers inoperative. On the MD88, this requires manual (not normal nor easily accomplished, due to poor design) spoiler deployment. It also disables automatic brakes and rejected takeoff capability, the problem is that air carrier is dispatching these aircraft to short runway fields like lex, ky, only 7000 ft long (5758 ft long for GS/runway intercept). They are setting us up for a runway departure, especially on an aborted takeoff. Additionally, this aircraft had an inoperative APU, increasing workload and concerns in the event of an engine failure or shutdown.
