Narrative:

I was cleared to 5000 ft on V6. I assumed I was cleared to cruise at 5000 ft because that's what is given to us on a regular basis. I started a VOR DME 20 approach, 12 DME arc. When the controller called to go direct to the VOR, I told her I was doing the 12 DME arc and cancel IFR because I was in VFR conditions.
