Narrative:

Received arrival to lga over allentown, then received clearance to cross allentown at 10000 ft, from 33000 ft shortly thereafter. Before we determined that we could not make the crossing, ATC called and asked if we were going to make it. ATC had us do a 360 degree right turn to descend. I believe controller knew we would have trouble making the crossing anyway when he gave clearance. New arrival and descent were given too close into the arrival. Should not have been given the arrival or expected to make the fast descent.

Title: ATC REQUESTED SUCH A LARGE ALT DSCNT IN SUCH A SHORT DISTANCE THAT ATC INSTRUCTED RPTR TO MAKE A 360 DEG TURN IN AN EFFORT TO MEET A LOWER XING RESTR.

Narrative: RECEIVED ARR TO LGA OVER ALLENTOWN, THEN RECEIVED CLRNC TO CROSS ALLENTOWN AT 10000 FT, FROM 33000 FT SHORTLY THEREAFTER. BEFORE WE DETERMINED THAT WE COULD NOT MAKE THE XING, ATC CALLED AND ASKED IF WE WERE GOING TO MAKE IT. ATC HAD US DO A 360 DEG R TURN TO DSND. I BELIEVE CTLR KNEW WE WOULD HAVE TROUBLE MAKING THE XING ANYWAY WHEN HE GAVE CLRNC. NEW ARR AND DSCNT WERE GIVEN TOO CLOSE INTO THE ARR. SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE ARR OR EXPECTED TO MAKE THE FAST DSCNT.
