Crew broke SOP by not watching aircraft go level at 17000 ft. Autoplt was not coupled to flight director. Less important duties had distraction crew. Excursion was caught at FL180. Aircraft was immediately returned to 17000 ft. SOP's must be followed!

Narrative: CREW BROKE SOP BY NOT WATCHING ACFT GO LEVEL AT 17000 FT. AUTOPLT WAS NOT COUPLED TO FLT DIRECTOR. LESS IMPORTANT DUTIES HAD DISTR CREW. EXCURSION WAS CAUGHT AT FL180. ACFT WAS IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO 17000 FT. SOP'S MUST BE FOLLOWED!
