Narrative:

Descent by rdu approach control from the ssw (from atl) to the west of rdu airport, then a turn north of the airport for a landing on the runway to the southeast side (opposite side of the airport). Approach control provided step-downs to 4000 ft, then 3000 ft, then 2500 ft with wind blowing from the northwest pushing the aircraft closer to the runway. Turn was given toward the north for more aircraft/runway separation. A turn to base was given and when airport was reported in sight, we were changed to rdu tower frequency. We visually acquired the closest runway and called to tower approximately 5 NM from runway touchdown zone. The tower provided a clearance to land on runway 23L with the aircraft aligned with runway 23R. Xchks with ILS runway 23L showed the aircraft to be right of course, centerline and visually high/steep for the runway directly ahead. At approximately 1200 ft AGL (1700 ft MSL) the PF initiated a go around to the right, north, upwind, to circle and realign with the correct runway (runway 23L). Tower reclred to land on runway 23L with a normal crosswind landing and rollout. No other aircraft traffic in the area.

Title: MLG WAS CLRED TO LAND RWY 23L. ACFT MADE APCH TO THE FIRST RWY SEEN WHICH WAS RWY 23R. FLC MADE A GAR WHEN THE ERROR BECAME APPARENT.

Narrative: DSCNT BY RDU APCH CTL FROM THE SSW (FROM ATL) TO THE W OF RDU ARPT, THEN A TURN N OF THE ARPT FOR A LNDG ON THE RWY TO THE SE SIDE (OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ARPT). APCH CTL PROVIDED STEP-DOWNS TO 4000 FT, THEN 3000 FT, THEN 2500 FT WITH WIND BLOWING FROM THE NW PUSHING THE ACFT CLOSER TO THE RWY. TURN WAS GIVEN TOWARD THE N FOR MORE ACFT/RWY SEPARATION. A TURN TO BASE WAS GIVEN AND WHEN ARPT WAS RPTED IN SIGHT, WE WERE CHANGED TO RDU TWR FREQ. WE VISUALLY ACQUIRED THE CLOSEST RWY AND CALLED TO TWR APPROX 5 NM FROM RWY TOUCHDOWN ZONE. THE TWR PROVIDED A CLRNC TO LAND ON RWY 23L WITH THE ACFT ALIGNED WITH RWY 23R. XCHKS WITH ILS RWY 23L SHOWED THE ACFT TO BE R OF COURSE, CTRLINE AND VISUALLY HIGH/STEEP FOR THE RWY DIRECTLY AHEAD. AT APPROX 1200 FT AGL (1700 FT MSL) THE PF INITIATED A GAR TO THE R, N, UPWIND, TO CIRCLE AND REALIGN WITH THE CORRECT RWY (RWY 23L). TWR RECLRED TO LAND ON RWY 23L WITH A NORMAL XWIND LNDG AND ROLLOUT. NO OTHER ACFT TFC IN THE AREA.
