Narrative:

After takeoff from ewr, using the SID, we established our departure climb. I was doing the after takeoff checklist, when departure control called and asked if we were maintaining 6000 ft. We had already climbed through 6000 ft. Before I could answer the call we were given a heading and told to climb to 17000 ft. The captain then stated he thought we were already cleared to 17000 ft.
