Cleared to descend from 12000 ft to 7000 ft on downwind heading east, following a heavy L1011. Visual conditions. Altitude alerting system inoperative on mco. Captain was working radios and watching traffic ahead at 3500 ft. First officer flying. So called out 'altitude,' as we passed 6200 ft. First officer made immediate correction back to 7000 ft. Captain had not called '1000 ft to go.' no traffic conflicts resulted.
