Narrative:
Shortly after landing ground control issued a taxi clearance to hold short of a taxiway. The taxiway we were to hold short of had a long line of aircraft waiting for takeoff during the evening bank. Ground control was very busy issuing taxi clrncs that it was nearly impossible to get a word in 'edgewise' so we could cross the taxiway and proceed to our gate. The captain edged his way through the line. I mentioned our hold short instructions and he acted ambivalent about the whole thing and we taxied to the gate without incident. When I questioned him about this he stated that he did not know we were to hold short. I should have been more forceful about the hold short clearance and forced a direct response from him about his intentions.
