Narrative:

On oct/xx/96 we received 2 B767-300 er tires back to the air carrier X maintenance shop because they would not fit on the airplane. On further review I noticed that the wrong bearings were installed on the outboard wheel halves. I then looked at the date these tires were built up (sep/96). Going through our records we built up 4 B767- 300 main wheels that day. I then sent notification to the stations we supply with this tire and informed them to look for the remaining 2 tires, supplying them with the serial numbers and date built, and have them return the tires to ord shop. Contributing factor: the wrong bearing that was installed #522-546 and the bearing that is correct #522-549 are both very similar in size and number. Corrective action: ultimately, it is the mechanic's responsibility to check all the numbers on each bearing for correctness.
