Narrative:

After takeoff an engine overheat light on the #2 engine illuminated. The crew completed the engine overheat checklist, declared an emergency, and returned to the field. The engine overheat light extinguished after the thrust lever was retarded to idle. An uneventful overweight landing was accomplished. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter was contacted and related the following information. The airplane was a B737-300 with ge cfm 56-3 engines installed. The reporter checked with maintenance about the corrective action but obtained no information. The reporter stated the FAA has made no contact.

Title: B737-300 DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED TO THE FIELD DUE TO #2 ENG OVERHEAT LIGHT ILLUMINATED.

Narrative: AFTER TKOF AN ENG OVERHEAT LIGHT ON THE #2 ENG ILLUMINATED. THE CREW COMPLETED THE ENG OVERHEAT CHKLIST, DECLARED AN EMER, AND RETURNED TO THE FIELD. THE ENG OVERHEAT LIGHT EXTINGUISHED AFTER THE THRUST LEVER WAS RETARDED TO IDLE. AN UNEVENTFUL OVERWT LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR WAS CONTACTED AND RELATED THE FOLLOWING INFO. THE AIRPLANE WAS A B737-300 WITH GE CFM 56-3 ENGS INSTALLED. THE RPTR CHKED WITH MAINT ABOUT THE CORRECTIVE ACTION BUT OBTAINED NO INFO. THE RPTR STATED THE FAA HAS MADE NO CONTACT.
