Narrative:

Sugar alert! This was the return home leg after a pro sports team charter. On our airline, meals are never boarded for the crew, so it was a real treat to gorge ourselves on the football player leftovers. After the monster double cheeseburger and a couple of haagen-daz ice cream bars a piece, I imagine we were all diverting more blood to the stomach for digestion than blood to the brain for thinking. Descending into cvg, I missed approach's clearance to 9000 ft. The copilot read it back, and I understood him to say 5000 ft. Approaching 9000 ft we armed altitude capture. The copilot then (mistakenly) commented that we were told to slow to 210 KTS. I started slowing as the autoplt caught and held 9000 ft. After reaching 210 KTS, I reinitiated the descent, out of 9000 ft for my (mistaken) target altitude of 5000 ft. The flight engineer noted my error (with appropriate disdain -- I believe he only had 1 haagen-daz bar) at 8500 ft. I recovered immediately to 9000 ft. There was no comment from approach. It appeared they had changed shift on the scope just as we deviated. Not much corrective action can be suggested with this one, short of random blood sugar tests. Perhaps the lesson learned is 'better lean and mean, than fat dumb and lazy.'

Title: B727 OVERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT DURING DSCNT.

Narrative: SUGAR ALERT! DSNDING INTO CVG, I MISSED APCH'S CLRNC TO 9000 FT. THE COPLT READ IT BACK, AND I UNDERSTOOD HIM TO SAY 5000 FT. APCHING 9000 FT WE ARMED ALT CAPTURE. THE COPLT THEN (MISTAKENLY) COMMENTED THAT WE WERE TOLD TO SLOW TO 210 KTS. I STARTED SLOWING AS THE AUTOPLT CAUGHT AND HELD 9000 FT. AFTER REACHING 210 KTS, I REINITIATED THE DSCNT, OUT OF 9000 FT FOR MY (MISTAKEN) TARGET ALT OF 5000 FT. THE FE NOTED MY ERROR (WITH APPROPRIATE DISDAIN -- I BELIEVE HE ONLY HAD 1 HAAGEN-DAZ BAR) AT 8500 FT. I RECOVERED IMMEDIATELY TO 9000 FT. THERE WAS NO COMMENT FROM APCH.
