Narrative:

ATC, ZOB, cleared us to cross junka intersection at 8000 ft. PNF read back clearance, PF (me) set 8000 ft into altitude preselect, and PNF confirmed setting was correct. After completing descent, an irate controller demanded to know our altitude stating we were cleared to 10000 ft. We promptly informed him of his error. Unknowingly, the controller failed to release his push- to-talk switch and we heard him tell detroit approach on the phone that he had cleared us to 10000 ft and we went to 8000 ft on our own. Fortunately, no conflict occurred. Detroit approach made no comments about the incident.
