Narrative:

On macey arrival to atl received standard clearance (west operation) to cross womac intersection at 9000 ft MSL from ZTL. I did. At frequency change the next controller verified altitude and climbed us to 10000 ft and turned us to 275 degree. I did. After landing in atl, ground control gave me a phone number to call about a possible pilot deviation. Jul/xx/96 I called atl FAA and was told it looked like an operational error. The center controller thought she stopped me at a higher altitude, gave us a turn, and slowed us to 190 KTS. The tapes only show us receiving and acknowledging the speed reduction. They (FAA) told me by phone not to worry, it looked like controller error and not to bother with a NASA form. They did say I was overtaking a company aircraft also at 9000 ft. We had no TCASII alert and I don't know how close we were. Supplemental information from acn 341960: approximately XX45 am eastern time, about 7 mi northeast of womac we were told by center to level at 10000 ft. We immediately began to bring the nose up, arresting the descent at 9400 ft. The second time we were told to level at 10000 ft, I noted some urgency in his voice leading me to believe that there was a problem. I believe there was a possible miscom between the controller who gave us the womac at 9000 ft and the controller who queried about our altitude.

Title: AN EMB120 OVERSHOOTS ALT DURING DSCNT INTO ATL.

Narrative: ON MACEY ARR TO ATL RECEIVED STANDARD CLRNC (W OP) TO CROSS WOMAC INTXN AT 9000 FT MSL FROM ZTL. I DID. AT FREQ CHANGE THE NEXT CTLR VERIFIED ALT AND CLBED US TO 10000 FT AND TURNED US TO 275 DEG. I DID. AFTER LNDG IN ATL, GND CTL GAVE ME A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL ABOUT A POSSIBLE PLTDEV. JUL/XX/96 I CALLED ATL FAA AND WAS TOLD IT LOOKED LIKE AN OPERROR. THE CTR CTLR THOUGHT SHE STOPPED ME AT A HIGHER ALT, GAVE US A TURN, AND SLOWED US TO 190 KTS. THE TAPES ONLY SHOW US RECEIVING AND ACKNOWLEDGING THE SPD REDUCTION. THEY (FAA) TOLD ME BY PHONE NOT TO WORRY, IT LOOKED LIKE CTLR ERROR AND NOT TO BOTHER WITH A NASA FORM. THEY DID SAY I WAS OVERTAKING A COMPANY ACFT ALSO AT 9000 FT. WE HAD NO TCASII ALERT AND I DON'T KNOW HOW CLOSE WE WERE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 341960: APPROX XX45 AM EASTERN TIME, ABOUT 7 MI NE OF WOMAC WE WERE TOLD BY CTR TO LEVEL AT 10000 FT. WE IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO BRING THE NOSE UP, ARRESTING THE DSCNT AT 9400 FT. THE SECOND TIME WE WERE TOLD TO LEVEL AT 10000 FT, I NOTED SOME URGENCY IN HIS VOICE LEADING ME TO BELIEVE THAT THERE WAS A PROB. I BELIEVE THERE WAS A POSSIBLE MISCOM BTWN THE CTLR WHO GAVE US THE WOMAC AT 9000 FT AND THE CTLR WHO QUERIED ABOUT OUR ALT.
