ATC flight crew miscom. Controller had told flight crew he would give them a heading at egl, and when he didn't, flight crew turned direct to next point. After frequency change the next controller queried flight crew about a heading assignment and had them contact center after landing.

Narrative:

Normal departure from phx egl 3, SID. I was told to continue on departure and to expect a heading to winslow, az. When we reached eagul intersection we turned toward winslow since no heading was assigned. The controller asked if we were assigned a previous heading, I replied 'no sir,' he gave us a heading for tulluride. 20 mins later we were instructed to call center upon landing. ZAB claims we were assigned a heading before eagul intersection and that we broke a clearance. ZAB replied, they would not pursue this. To the best of my knowledge, I did not hear the clearance ZAB claims to have given.

ZAB CLAIMS WE WERE ASSIGNED A HDG BEFORE EAGUL INTXN AND THAT WE BROKE A CLRNC. ZAB REPLIED, THEY WOULD NOT PURSUE THIS.
