Narrative:

First officer, mr X, was flying flight seattle to los angeles. Cleared route was lakeview VOR (112.0), J-67, to linden VOR (114.8). Mr X departed lakeview to mustang VOR (117.9) wrong route J-5. As captain of the flight, I did not catch his navigation mistake. 80 mi south of lakeview VOR, ZLC finally caught mr X's mistake. We were then reclred J-7 to los angeles without incident. No in-flight conflicts noted. 80 mi south of lakeview en route mustang equals 20 mi east of cleared route.
